My Word For 2024
By:  Being Andrea
January 01, 2024 | 3 min read
I’m watching the sun rise over the river, off the balcony of an amazing hotel in San Antonio.  The city is slowly waking up, an occasional horn, the hum of the trash truck, mostly silence.

I’m wrapped in the softest blanket, the air is crisp and clean.  Slightly hung over from the New Year festivities of last night.  This is the perfect setting for me to choose my word for the year.

I’m wrapped in the softest blanket, the air is crisp and clean.  Slightly hung over from the New Year festivities of last night.  This is the perfect setting for me to choose my word for the year.

Every January I choose my ‘word for the year’.  It’s become a delightful tradition that serves me every year.  The word takes the place of a New Year resolution. It’s a word that embodies what you want to be/think/feel/do.

Something that you can apply in little ways throughout your life instead of a concrete goal that involves either failure or success. It’s a theme, a lantern in the darkness, your guiding light.

And the word for this year is...

Empower. em·pow·er - /əmˈpou(ə)r/ verb

give (someone) the authority or power to do something. make (someone) stronger and more confident, especially in controlling their life and claiming their rights.

In 2018, I decided my life needed to be about ‘change'.  I’ve changed a great deal.  And I’m about to make some life-altering changes as well.

In 2019, I brought forth ‘manifest’, and worked to re-align my thoughts and actions to move me closer to the things I need in my life every day.  It's connected to the change I am manifesting.

As I follow this path, it is obvious to me that 'empower' is the next area of growth for the changes I have chosen, that I have been manifesting to fruition.

To give myself the power over my life so I can embrace this next chapter.  Focusing on making myself stronger and more confident.

Another aspect of this years goal is to reach out to others.  I want to work to empower others to follow their hearts, grasp their dreams and bring their lives into what they truly want.

How do you choose?

Ask yourself what you need. Right now and going into the new year, what do you need? My word almost always forms from that question. If that word doesn’t immediately resonate with you, check with a thesaurus and see if one of the words associated with it does. Ask yourself what qualities can help you achieve that thing that you need.

Make a Word List. Write down all of the words that are calling out to you right now. They can be random words, don’t overthink it, just let the words release and flow out.

Write down your goals. If you are someone that likes to make a lot of goals or resolutions, write them all down and then see if there’s a theme that’s connecting them. Maybe your word needs to ‘motivation’ so that you can tackle all of those things and get them done or ‘fit’ to inspire you to move more.

Who do you want to be? I think it’s common to want to turn over a new leaf. I can name several qualities I want to cultivate within myself. What qualities or traits do you want to bring into your life? Let your word inspire you to be that thing.

Don’t overthink it. My word sometimes takes me a while to figure it out. I usually start thinking about it in the beginning of December and sometimes it doesn’t come to me until I’m halfway through January. Your word will feel right. You’ll know it when you find it.

Let it find you. If there’s a word you just feel drawn to – even if it doesn’t make sense right now, take a leap of faith and go with it.

The steps for choosing your word:

1. Reflect on your journey up to this point.

2. Choose things from that reflection that move you.

3. Visualize living in those words.

4. Narrow your choices to the words that really resonate with you.

5. Decide which one truly defines what you want.

6. Embrace it.  Place it everywhere, your bath mirror, your phone, computer, random post-it notes.   Spend everyday bringing your word forward.
