Falling Into Autumn

It’s raining.  I love the sound of soft rain on the metal roof.  The sun is starting to set.  There’s a gold hue across the sky punctuated by the falling sun.  The air is heavy with the intoxicating smell of rain.  The swirling wind rustles the tree limbs.  I’m happy.  I’m ready for Autumn.

"And I rose in rainy autumn.   And walked abroad in a shower of all my days…"

- Dylan Thomas

I love to go all-in on the season’s.  Now that summer is pulling to a close, I open my heart to the things of Fall.   I believe that Fall happens in October.  The space between Summer and Fall has always been Autumn to me.

“Go, sit upon the lofty hill, And turn your eyes around, Where waving woods and waters wild Do hymn an autumn sound. The summer sun is faint on them— The summer flowers depart— Sit still— as all transform’d to stone, Except your musing heart.”

Elizabeth Barrett Browning

We need a good transition from the joys of beach-life, tall cool drinks, minimal clothes and hot temperatures to the invigorating pace of spiced pumpkin lattes, hearty foods, long walks and cooler temperatures.

We are intimately connected to the movements of the Earth.    Tuning into this is grounding. It opens up a path for growth that can bring welcomed transition.  Autumn Equinox brings the opportunity to clarify your direction in this life.  To balance and fine-tune it for renewed strength.

September is our last chance to enjoy sunny evenings before the time-change steals away and we are faced with darkness by dinnertime.   The cooling of each day helps us to say farewell to summer more easily.

“Notice that autumn is more the season of the soul than of nature.”

- Friedrich Nietzsche

I confess, I am a summer-child worshipping strong sun days, sand between my toes and the lull of the waves kissing the shore.  Every season has its beauty.  I try to embrace them with rituals.  Autumn has always been my chance to shift gears.

Winter is about death, burning off what is no longer needed.  Fall is the transition between.   I enjoy filling this time with reflection, turning inward and opening my heart to change.

October is when I begin my resolutions for the year, so the time leading up to it is my chance to review the year, celebrate what went well and analyze what didn’t bring the outcome I had hoped for.

Contentment is found in walking beneath the cascading splendor  that is Autumn.  This always turns me melancholy.  I’m not sure why.  Maybe because of how fleeting the time seems.

"Autumn shows us how beautiful it is to let things go.”

Enjoy the coming of the longer nights and shorter days.   Express gratitude often.  Make the most of this time before the frenetic holidays are upon us. Celebrate Autumn.
