Create A Ritual Of Saying Goodbye To Summer

Create A Ritual Of Saying Goodbye To Summer
By:  Being Andrea

September 03, 2020 |  2 min read
As August draws to a close again, I'm reminiscing about the amazing things we did this summer and the beautiful people we met.

I'm a summer person so August always makes me melancholy.  When the weather is good, and the weekend frees me from work, I'm a sailor.

Most of our companions are fair weather friends, so as the temperature drops and swimming is no longer an option, we'll have less and less company on the boat.
The summer feels so carefree and it seems that September and October are stolen moments as we count down the days to the time-change, which I totally dread.

Do you like the time-change?

I video, photograph and record all I can throughout the summer so I have mementos of the glorious moments to tide me over through the quiet fall & winter.

This year I searched out some things to make the transition easier:

Focus on the positives

Create an end-of-summer tradition.  We plan a special Labor Day weekend with multiple sails and activities to lovingly say so long to summer.  We host as many as 40 friends for our Labor Day Festivities each year.

Whatever you decide to do, as long as you enjoy it, commit to doing this same thing every year.

As the weather grows colder, instead of staring out the window pining for the sun, get cozy in oversized sweaters and cuddle up with your love. Fall and winter provide opportunities to engage in indoor bonding activities such as pirate games, cooking lessons and the like.

Before you know it, holiday festivities will be here, bringing a different kind of joy.

Work on goal-setting

As we prepare the boat for the cooler weather, it motivates me to think on what I would like to accomplish to end my year right.   While many people believe that this type of planning is only for January, setting goals twice a year reduces the pressure to complete them.  I wind up feeling more accomplished, for sure.

Making seasonal goals is more effective and a great positive activity.

Make a fall and winter music playlist

I like to pick out songs to represent the fall and winter holidays or music that evokes feelings of joy for this time of year. It helps me ease into this season a little better.

So, instead of closing out the summer with the blues, end the season with some proactive fall and winter to-dos.

As summer winds down, I like to make it a joy-filled transition of rest and mind-clearing before the holidays.
