Why Winter Is A Fun Time To Be Active

When winter blows in, you can pull the blankets over your head and go back to sleep—or you can suit up and head out for an outdoor winter adventure!
There’s no reason you need to take a break from physical activity when the temperature drops. In fact, exercising in cooler weather has some distinct advantages over working out in warmer weather.

Don't let the colder weather slow you down. There are great benefits to working out in the cold of winter.

  • It’s a great way to take in the sunlight (in small doses). Not only can light improve many people’s moods, it also helps you get some vitamin D.

  • You'll probably be able to work out longer in cold weather—which means more calories burned.

  • Did you know exercise boosts your immunity during cold. Just a few minutes a day can help a whole lot.

  • You'll have no heat or humidity to deal with. Winter’s chill might even make you feel awake and invigorated.

  •  If you are wanting to increase to  at least 60 minutes of exercise each week, remember you can break either down into 10-minute sessions sprinkled throughout your day.

  • Walking
  • Bike riding
  • Hiking
  • Sledding, if you have snow
  • Even raking leaves will work

While the benefits are glorious this time of year, be wise and aware of the weather. Layer - Layer - Layer.  Dress warm and dry—always layer with moisture wicking fabrics first, then fleece, and a thin waterproof jacket.

Don’t forget to drink water when exercising in cooler weather. Thirst isn’t the best indicator that you need to drink.

Of course, stay inside when it’s bitterly cold.

Going for a walk in the park after a fresh snowfall is one of the most exhilarating, stress-reducing things I can think of. These are a lot of activities that bring this same benefit.

Remember the sun, it's often overlooked winter workouts. Use sunscreen if sunlight is bright or reflecting off snow, and wear sunglasses to guard against glare.

Combining physical activity and nature – both known to improve general and mental health – is connected to better emotional well-being.

You’ll be more comfortable when you first step outdoors if you do your warm-up before you leave the house.

Unfortunately, the truth is that when you start to exercise, the first 5 to 10 minutes can be miserable - unless you're dressed right and are warmed up a little.

Winter exercise gives you a great excuse for warming up with some delicious peppermint tea or hot cocoa!
